Fitz v St Edmund Hall
Stowe -
11 July 2024
Under the gaze of Viscount Cobham, our annual match against Teddy Hall, our oldest rivals took place this year at Stowe Golf Club which is located within the grounds of Stowe School House. This was, without a doubt, the most memorable setting we have ever played in! In amongst the neoclassical archways, plinths and columns in the expansive countryside, a new 9-hole golf course, designed to PGA standards, was opened in 2020. It was a perfect setting for our contest.
Both sides fielded six strong teams. Hall was led by Chris Atkinson (former pupil and staff member at Stowe), and Fitz by Pete Bennett. As ever it was a close-run match with the outcome being decided by the outcome of the final pairing.
The first match was a mini-Stapleford scoring game between Chris Atkinson, and Pete Bennett and Mike Hamment. Chris using local knowledge and considerable skill scored 40 points against a Fitz average score of 35 points. One up to Hall.
Match two featured the more usual four ball better ball format with John Uwins and Jon Pritchard dovetailing well together and winning their game 1 up. All square then.
Match three was our middle order team of Andrew Garden and Paul Fairweather. Up against probably Hall’s best golfer, they lost 1 down on the 18th hole. Close run match but again putting Hall back in the lead.
Fortunately, the next two matches went Fitz’s way. In match four Graham May and Stuart Lester won 4 and 3. In match five, Colin Dunkerley and Brian Smith clawed their way back from three down to run out winners, 2 and 1. With one match to go, Fitz were one ahead. In previous years, we tended to be one behind at this stage.
However, an outright win wasn’t to be.
Our final duo, Robin Winckless and Nigel Smethers slipped to a 3 and 1 loss. Notwithstanding this disappointment, Fitz halved the overall contest at three points al. A draw on the day but, most importantly, Fitz, as holders, retained the One Size Trophy and the famous Red Jacket.
Afterwards everyone was treated to a fantastic buffet in the majestic setting of the Music room of Stowe House. This was followed by a mini tour of the beautifully restored state rooms, ending on the south facing balcony with its breath-taking vista. Surely one of the most iconic views in Britain.
It was a privilege to be part of the experience and we are grateful to Chris Atkinson in organising such a memorable day for us. Thanks Chris!
