Golf for Alumni of Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge

Welcome to Fitzwilliam Golf Society.

Do Join Us!    A message for 2026 from the President, Mike Hamment

The Fitzwilliam Golf Society was formed over 10 years ago – by a small group who had been at Fitzwilliam in the mid-1970s. The Golf Society exists for Fitzwilliam College alumni to get together and to play friendly golf on good courses. Although clearly you do need some golfing experience to play with us, ability levels in our Society range from single figure handicaps (a handful) to quite high handicaps. Since the start, the Society has grown greatly – and we’re proud to say that we’re easily the most active alumni golf society of any Oxbridge college.

We organise golf days and short tours – at least 18 rounds of golf annually, including tours. We try to visit good quality courses, mainly in the South East, but also around the UK on our tours. And we try to promote smaller scale “Fitz Locals” where members meet for a social round in their own area.

Our main event is the Fitz Open, in early September. This golf day is always played at a course near Cambridge and is followed by a dinner in college. We normally have about 35 Fitz members playing – which is excellent. And there is space for guests at our Annual Golf Dinner in College which follows. The list of our main fixtures for 2026 is shown at the end of this report.

Any Fitz graduate or member is very welcome to play with us and we’re particularly keen to have more women golfers. There is no annual subscription – just pay for the event you attend.  As indicated above, we have been remarkably successful in getting many Fitz alumni out playing with us – especially those who were at college in the 1970s and early 1980s. But we are now keen to further promote the Society – and especially encourage more Fitz alumni who were at college in the 1980s and early 1990s to start playing with us. Hopefully folk from these decades may be now starting to get a bit more time to play some golf – and could join us, even if it’s only an occasional basis. You would find it a very friendly Society – most of our golf is “social” and not taken too seriously – and for many of us, the meeting up with old and new friends is the most important part of the golf days.

Our Captain this year is Michael Hall and he leads off our 2026 main schedule. We have a late March Tour to Brancaster and Hunstanton in North Norfolk  but he hosts the Captain’s Season Opener proper on 28 April at his home club of Nuneaton GC.

There is much fuller information elsewhere on this website about the Society and our forthcoming and past events. Bookings for each event can be made by contacting our Secretary, Colin Dunkerley. We have no annual subscriptions.

There is a contact section on the website – which can be used to get in touch with us. Or, if preferred, we’re sure that the Development Office at college can pass on a message from anyone interested to learn more about us. We also have a Facebook page.
