Bristol Fitz Local - Tuesday 23 July at Henbury GC
The Bristol based Fitz golfers of Pete Thomas, Norman Bell and Colin Dunkerley welcomed friends visiting from a little further afield. John Coombs, Simon Blackler and Ian Rosser travelled up from the South West while Fred Hartley and President Mike Hamment came from Hereford and Oxford respectively. So, eight in total.
The venue was Henbury Golf Club, which organiser, Colin Dunkerley had become a member of that very morning! Henbury is a pleasant parkland course in suburban Bristol with plenty of trees lining the fairways, some testing sideways runs on the fairways and two very steep climbs – which tested the lung power of several. The course was in fine condition and we were blessed with some nice summery weather.
A team of “Oldies” comprising Pete, Fred, Mike and Ian took on the “Youngsters” comprising Colin, Norman, John and Simon in a social competition with the best two scores on each hole (best three on par 3s) from each team counting.
The Oldies were boosted by a fine round from Mike while the Youngsters struggled on the Par 3s particularly and the Oldies won comfortably 92 – 85. Nearest the Pin was held on the signature 7th hole – 140 yards downhill and across the stream (or in the stream for some of us). Norman Bell was the clear winner.
One notable incident was Simon Blackler’s runaway trolley on the slope next to the 4th green causing Simon to break into a impromptu sprint – “faster than I’ve had to run in years!”
Drinks were taken and results announced on the terrace which was followed by a good golfer’s meal of ham egg and chips.
