The annual Inter-College Alumni Golf Tournament was held at at the Gog Magog Golf Club on 18th April. We have several times come second, but this year we won!
With 16 Colleges and 120 players, 5 players from each team played on the Old Course, with a two tee start, and 1 from each team on the Wandlebury Course. The format was for the top five scores from the teams of six to count. The courses were in great condition and the greens true, but there was a strong wind blowing which made the mainly uphill against the wind outward nine very challenging.
The result, known only to the Organiser, was announced after the main course of the dinner at held at St John’s, last year’s winners, and the Fitz team was delighted to win by one point, with a score of 171. It was particularly satisfying to beat St John’s, the winner for the last two years, by one point!
The Fitz team of Andrew Garden, Graham May, Richard Newport, Nigel Smethers (winners of events through the year), Mike Hamment (best individual score at last year’s event) and captain Brian Smith put in a solid performance, averaging an excellent 34 points, but star of the day was Graham May with 41 points – the best individual score on the day.
The Fitz team happily retired to the bar after an excellent meal and celebrated in true Fitz style. The result means that the dinner will be held at Fitz next year, an additional organisational burden we are very happy to bear.
Brian Smith (Captain)
